No Audition Apologies | Tom Logan

Stop apologizing and start acting.

Apologizing is the number one complaint about you inauditions. It’s not the number onecomplaint about your performance, but it is about you personally and hasremained the number one complaint year after year. Having said that, if you spill coffee onsomeone in the audition room, then by all means apologize! I’m talking about apologizing for yourperformance or anything related to it.

Let’s discuss some of the many waysactors apologize. I can tell you whatyou’re going to do the minute you walk in the door – apologize. The apology: “Well, ah, the reason I waslate is because my car broke down, then I had to call AAA, and then AAA had aflat tire….”

Number one: We don’t care. Number two: We don’t care. Number three: We don’t care. Once you actually come into the audition room,I doubt the director even knows that you’re late.

Having saidthis does not give you permission to belate! Absolutely not. If you’re late, you’ll have to answer to thecasting director, who won’t look favorably on you for the next audition.

Anotherapology actors make: “You know, I’mkind of nervous…I haven’t done this very much.” I’ve even had actors who are well-known with starring credits startapologizing in this way.

Or: “Well,I just got here a few minutes ago and haven’t had a lot of time to look overthe script and I’m kind of unprepared.” Here you are walking into a room full of people with no idea what you’reabout to do and you’re telling them how poorly you’re about to do it!

How wouldyou like it if a painter who shows up at your house says, “You know, I just gothere minutes ago and haven’t had time to mix the paints, so I’m a littleunprepared to paint your house right now”? Would this give you a good feeling about the work he’s about to do?

There isalmost no excuse for being unprepared in an audition. And if you are unprepared (shame on you!),don’t try to make it look as though it’s the casting director’s fault.

Actors alsodon’t realize that even little comments they make are heard by us. At the end of an actor’s performance, thecamera operator in the audition room will say, “Cut.” The actor will swear, roll his eyes, shakehis head, etc., without realizing that, from the word “cut” to the time the operatorpushes the “stop” button, about three seconds have passed. Those quick comments at the end of aperformance are seen and heard by us!

Youwouldn’t have much confidence in an airline pilot who starts up apologizingabout his flying skills right before the flight – and you wouldn’t feel too confident with a doctorwho keeps apologizing while working on you. In what other profession do people want to tell you howincompetent they are when they’re trying to get a job from you?

"I play the role of Susan Hamilton in the film the Wisdom Tree. This role is a particular challenge because not only do I play Susan Hamilton as a young single mother but as a 60 year old women. It took 3 hours in hair and make-up to transform me into the elderly Susan Hamilton. And the amazing team that transformed me used every single second. They were lead by the very talented Margaret Caragan. My make-up was so good that a particular day comes to mind. I had just finished with hair and make up and decided to take a walk "off set" to focus and find my character, keep in mind I look like a 60 year old women. I happen to walk by this nice looking "young man" who steps out of the way for me and says, "good afternoon" and I respond with a cool hip, "hey." And then he looks at me, I mean really looks at me and the look on his face was such confusion. My face was so old and tired but the swing in my step and contridicted everything. I can only image what he was thinking, or maybe I can't.

I truly enjoyed the opportunity to play Susan. It is not often you get to play a role that can remember and reflect on the mistakes of the past from two different time perspectives. She was writen with such honest deepth. She touched me deeply."
